HAGGAI CHAPTER 2

Read the Haggai Chapter 1 Article here.

Haggai 2:1 In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the LORD by the prophet Haggai, saying, 2 Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying, 3 Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?

Are there any among us who have seen God’s house (family) in its glory? NO WAY!  We have no shepherds!

Ezekiel 34:5 And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered…..8 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;

…and we are in a severe famine of the word:

Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

…and God’s house (family) lies in shambles:

Haggai 1:4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your ceiled houses, and this house lie waste?

Is it time for you to dwell in your splinter group and living room church families?

Haggai 2:4 contains instructions directly to the end-time Zerubbabel-Joshua (Elijah).

Haggai 2:4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:

In Haggai, Zerubbabel and Joshua must be types of the end-time Elijah.  Remember, where is the promise of any end-time prophets or priests other than Elijah and the two witnesses.  Only Elijah can make ready a people prepared for the Lord:

Luke 1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Notice God’s instruction to “be strong.”  This word “Strong” is Strong’s #2388 and the primary meaning is “to fasten upon…”  Zodhiates’ Lexical Aids to the New Testament says of the same word “to be bound fast, to attach, to make firm…”

This is an instruction to us to fasten upon God, to bind fast to God, to attach to God, to make firm our relationship with God.  This is the same instruction given to the original Joshua:

Joshua 1: 6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. 7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.…..9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Revelation 21:8 shows what will happen to the people who will not do this–who will not fasten upon God, who will not be strong and courageous:

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

The instructions in Haggai 2:4 to end-time Zerubbabel-Joshua (Elijah) are also to the “people of the land.”  In this case, end-time Christians worldwide, of Christ’s various folds:

John 10:16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

In Haggai 2:4 God says to us “all you people of the land, be strong and work, for I am with you.”  If we will be strong and fasten to Him and work, what a blessing!  And in the process we will obtain eternal life.

In a nutshell, we must accomplish Revelation 7:1-4, 9 and 14:

Revelation 7:1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, 3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. 4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel….9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands….14…And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Continuing in Haggai:

Haggai 2:5 According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.

When did the end-time Christians, for whom the Bible is written (1 Corinthians 10:11), come out of Egypt?  We did this when we repented and were baptized and made our personal covenant with God to live His way.  God gave us His Spirit at that time.  He encourages us to remain strong by telling us that His Spirit remains with us.

“Fear” is Strong’s #3372, meaning “to revere, to frighten…”  Zodhiates says “to be afraid, to fear, to revere, to be dreadful…”

We will certainly have many causes for fear in the end time, with all the things that Satan will be confronting us with:

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

God guarantees us in Haggai 2:4 that He will be with us if we will do our part.  Also in verse 5 the promise continues: His spirit will be among us.  We can be sure of this because it is impossible for God to lie:

Hebrews 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

Haggai 2:6 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; 7 And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.

“Shake” in both verses is Strong’s #7493 “to undulate…” (a wavelike motion).

How awesome this show of power will be!  The heavens will shake (waving), as well as the earth and the oceans.  What tremendous tidal waves this will cause.  Notice in Revelation that earthquakes are mentioned several times:

Revelation 6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

Revelation 8:5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

Revelation 11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven…. 19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

“Earthquake” in the above verses is Strong’s #4578: “a commotion, i.e. (of the air) a gale, (of the ground) an earthquake…”  The earthquake described in Revelation 16:18 must also be the earthquakes of Haggai 2:6-7 and Isaiah 13:13.  Notice that the earth and heavens could undulate with wavelike motion.  In these quakes the word quake in Haggai 2:6-7 is #7493.  Review the definition above.

Revelation 16:18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.

Isaiah 13:13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

Under God’s protections is the only place to be when this happens:

Haggai 2:6 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; 7 And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.

Obviously, “the desire of all nations” is Christ.  This is the time of refreshing mentioned in Acts 3:19:

19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

This is, deep down, the desire of all humans.  But the majority won’t submit to this mighty God in order to receive the good He produces.

Continuing in verse 7, this mighty God who can shake the heavens and the earth claims He will fill His house with glory.  “House is Strong’s #1004: “a house in the greatest variety of applications, especially a family” (emphasis mine).  God is going to fill His family with glory, and we will all have glorified bodies:

1 Corinthians 15:41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: 43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

All our efforts will be rewarded in that time.

Haggai 2:8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts. 9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

God makes statements that only He can back up.  He claims all the riches in verse 8.  He claims that the glory of the latter house (family) will be greater than that of the former house (the physical building).  And there will be peace in this place (family).

Haggai 2:10  In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

Verse 10, and several verses in this book, give dates, months and years.  Hopefully we can figure out the meaning of these dates, possibly in hindsight.  The Bible is written for the end-time Christians, and this will possibly have meaning for us later:

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Haggai 2:11 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying, 12 If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No. 13 Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean. 14 Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.

Who is this people mentioned in Haggai 2:14?  “People” is Strong’s #5971 meaning “a people (as a congregated unit); spec. a tribe…”  It’s the same “people” mentioned in Haggai 1:2, Strong’s #5971.

Remember, the Bible is written for the end-time Christians:

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

These people in Haggai 1:2 are saying “it is not time to build God’s family.  I am comfortable in my splinter group of WCG.  Don’t wake me up with this cry at midnight, Elijah.”

Haggai 2:14 shows God’s opinion of these people (the end-time Christians, 1 Corinthians 10:11), and His opinion of “this nation.”  They are both unclean to God.  Why? Because there is a famine of the word going on in the end time:

Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

Does Amos 8:12 not describe us today running to and fro looking for God’s word?  Running from our various splinter group leaders to these “no shepherds” of Ezekiel 34:5 and 8?

Ezekiel 34: 5 And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered….8 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;

If you want to argue that this is not referring to the end time, study the whole chapter of Ezekiel 34 and apply your experience in the WCG with Ezekiel 34:4, if you are a former member of that group.

Ezekiel 34:4 The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them.

Notice also in the last part of verse 10 that Christ takes a personal hand in the situation, then the chapter goes on into the millennium:

Ezekiel 34:10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.

Back to Haggai 1:12:

Haggai 1: 12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD.

Notice that the people are awakened.  The “remnant” is Strong’s #7611: “remainder or residue (surviving, final) portion…”  Zodhiates’ Lexical Aids to the Old Testament adds: “especially after a slaughter…”

What slaughter?  The slaughter of WCG, the work (church) built on sand.  Was it built on the solid rock (Christ)?  What happened when the two sons of Satan, Joe Tkach, Sr. and Jr., took over the WCG?  The “work” washed away; it became a cadaver.  You will, no doubt, see that this was the Sardis church, as I show in my article “Sardis, an Attitude?” and other articles on the End-time Work.

One thing I might add here is that the Worldwide Church of God was just one fold of God’s sheep.  There are six others.

On to Haggai 1:14:

Haggai 1: 14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,

This “remnant” (review above definition) goes to work doing the end-time work of God (building His family or “house”).

Now back to Haggai 2:15:

Haggai 2:15 And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:

“Temple” is Strong’s #1964 and means “a large public building such as a palace or temple…”

Haggai 2:16 Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty. 17 I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.

God reminds Zerubbabel/Joshua (Elijah) and the residue of the people that they had been smitten in the past with a scarcity of food and drink (notice this in verse 17).  God has smitten all the labor of their hands.  So it is today with the end-time Christians.  They also have been smitten in their spiritual works.  Look at the results of the work of the WCG.  Look at the results of all the splinters of the WCG.  The spiritual works of their hands have been, and are, coming to NOTHING.  Remember, we are in a famine of the word:

Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

…because there are no shepherds:

Ezekiel 34: 5 And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered….8 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;

God smites the spiritual efforts, yet there is no repentance forth coming:

Haggai 2:17 I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.

Remember, this is a spiritual application (1 Corinthians 10:11) and all our spiritual efforts come to nothing.

Haggai 2:18 Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD’S temple was laid, consider it.

God is speaking of a physical building again in verse 18, at the time the foundation was laid. This word “consider,” is Strong’s #7760, and according to Zodhiates’ Complete Word Study Old Testament, “has various meanings, the various meanings cluster into 6 sets. The basic meaning is to put something somewhere…”

Now tie in Zechariah 4:9 with Haggai 2:18.

Zechariah 4:9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.

Notice that Zerubbabel has laid the foundation of this house.  “House” is Strong’s #1004, and I’ll remind you that the meaning is “family.”  So, this Zerubbabel (Elijah of Luke 1:17) lays the foundation of God’s end-time family.  Also remember back in Haggai 1:2 and 4, “house” is the same Hebrew word meaning “family.”  In Haggai 1:8 we are told to go to the mountain to get the materials to build God’s family.

Luke 1:17  And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Haggai 1:8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.

Is this mountain not God’s throne?  This is the only place we can go to get spiritual materials to build God’s family.  Remember the word “consider” in Haggai 2:18 has the basic meaning “to put something somewhere.”

Haggai 2:18 Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD’S temple was laid, consider it. 19 Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.

The question is asked, “Is there any seed in the barn?”   The statement is made, “The vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree haven’t produced any fruit yet.”  Why is this question asked?  Several translations ask, “Is any seed left in the barn?”  There are various ways of wording this question, and the King James is actually asking “Is there any seed yet in the barn?”  What is the spiritual application of this?  Don’t forget 1 Corinthians 10:11: the Bible is written primarily for the end-time Christians.  There can be no seed left in the barn–we are in a famine of the word (Amos 8:11).  Is there any fruit born at this point?  What point, you may ask?  When Zerubbabel (Elijah) lays the foundation.  Hardly not. We are still in a famine of the word.  This Zerubbabel (Elijah) may not even know who he is at the time, or may still have doubts or questions if he is the one, when he inadvertently lays the foundation.

Haggai 2:19 Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.

Why is the olive tree mentioned as not bearing fruit?  It represents the Holy Spirit, and the virgins are all asleep:

Mat 25:5  While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

No fruit is born while we are sleeping because the spirit hasn’t been stirred up yet:

Haggai 1:14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,

Notice the tremendous encouragement in the last sentence of Haggai 2:19: “from this day will I bless you.”

So, once this foundation is laid (inadvertently or not) by Zerubbabel/Elijah, understanding is opened to us.  Then Jesus Christ will start to do the end-time harvest of Revelation 7:1-4, 9 and 14.

Romans 9:27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: 28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.

As He stirs up the spirit in us, as the cry at midnight comes to us individually, we will wake up and begin to accomplish the works of Daniel 12:3 and Revelation 3:7-8.

Daniel 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

Revelation 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; 8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

The true Philadelphians will begin to shine through.  They will recognize the synagogue of Satan in their midst that they are warned about in Revelation 3:9.

Revelation 3:9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

Now on to Haggai 2:20:

Haggai 2:20 And again the word of the LORD came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying, 21 Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth; 22 And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.

God gives us information regarding His punishment of the end-time world at large (Haggai 2:21 and 22) as He establishes His house (family).  Notice the promise to this Zerubbabel (Elijah) in Haggai 2:23:

Haggai 2:23 In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.

This describes the blessings given to Zerubbabel (Elijah) when all is said and done.  Remember, Elijah is the only prophet, other than the two witnesses, who is guaranteed to come:

Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:

Matthew 17:10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? 11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. 12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. 13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

Luke 1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

I ask again, where is the promise of and end-time Zerubbabel or Joshua in the scriptures?  God promises to this Elijah character that He will make him a “signet” or seal.

According to Unger’s Bible Dictionary, a “signet” is “a portable instrument used to stamp a document or other article instead of or with the signed manual.  The impression made therewith has the same actual validity as an actual signature, as is still the case in the east.  Indeed, the importance attached to this method is so great that without a seal, no document is considered authentic.  In a similar matter coffers, doors of houses and tombs were sealed.”

Zhondervan’s Expository Dictionary of Bible Words says “the seal [or signet] also showed ownership and suggests security.  The impression of this engraved ring or tool was a mark of authenticity…”

God’s promise is to make this man as a seal or signet.  So Elijah will be God’s signet or seal of the end-time harvest.  If you are his fruit, you are God’s fruit.  What a blessing this man will have after all is said and done.  Zechariah 3:7 adds to the fantastic blessing this man will receive.

Zechariah 3:7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.

Notice, “I will give you places to walk among these who stand by.”  Study Zechariah 3:1-6 for an indication of who is standing by (see my article on Zechariah Chapter 3).  No doubt, the twenty-four elders are probably standing by.  But it is a guarantee, also, that this man will catch all sorts of hell getting to the finish line.  Notice in Zechariah 3:1 that Satan is standing at his right hand to resist him…do you want personal attention from Satan?  This end-time Zerubbabel/Joshua/Elijah must endure Satan’s personal attention, but in the end, Elijah wins.
