LOT’S FAMILY: A PROTOTYPE

Lot’s family is a prototype for the end-time churches, especially the Philadelphian church.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

“Examples” is Strong’s #5179: “a die (as struck), i.e. (by impl.) a stamp or scar; by anal. a shape, i.e. statue, (fig.) style or resemblance; spec. a sampler (“type“), i.e. a model (for imitation) or instance (for warning).”

Zodhiates’ Complete Word Study New Testament says: “type, as a constituent element of a parable or model of some reality which was yet to appear, a prototype of that which was yet to be developed and evolved.”

“Admonition” is Strong’s #3559: “calling attention to, i.e. (by impl.) mild rebuke or warning.”

Does 2 Timothy 3:16 mean what it says?  You bet it does!

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

Combining the above two verses gives us a valuable insight into the message about Lot in Genesis 19.

Christ says in Romans 9:27-29 that He will make a short work on the earth.  Since God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, His definition of “short” probably will not be the same as ours.

Romans 9:27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: 28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. 29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodom, and been made like unto Gomorrha.

Romans 9:27-29 is a quote from Isaiah 1:9 and 10:22-23:

Isaiah 1:9 Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

Isaiah 10:22 For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness. 23 For the Lord GOD of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.

Remember 1 Corinthians 10:11.  The Bible is written for the end-time Christians.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

This “remnant” in Romans 9:27 and the “seed” in verse 29 are clearly identified in Malachi 4:5-6.  Elijah the Prophet will come before the great and dreadful day of the Lord:

Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: 6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

The parents and children are the 10 virgins:

Matthew 25:2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

What will Elijah’s job be?  It is to deliver the cry at midnight—Matthew 25:6.  Why?  Because all the “seed” in Romans 9:29, the “remnant” of verse 27, are asleep (Matthew 25:5).

Matthew 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. 6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

So, what if Elijah fails in this job?  The last part of the last verse in Malachi tells us:

Malachi 4:6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

This word “curse” is Strongs #2764: “usually a doomed object; abstr. extermination:—(ac-) curse(-d)…things which should have been utterly destroyed, (appointed to) utter destruction…”   Herbert W. Armstrong preached this as “utter destruction” and I think he was correct in this.  This same word, Strongs #2764, is used in Joshua 6 in speaking of Jericho.  Apparently, God will visit the earth with utter destruction if Elijah fails in his job.  Thus, we would have the fulfillment of Romans 9:29.

Romans 9:27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: 28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. 29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.

However, this remnant, this seed, will be spared and saved.  A few will be saved.  The “few” in Matthew 22:14 are mentioned a couple of times in the New Testament:

Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

Matthew 20:16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

These “few” are described in Revelation 7:1-4, 9, 14:

Revelation 7:1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, 3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. 4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

Revelation 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands………14….And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

So what is in this prototype of Lot and his family for us?  Much, if we will listen to what God says.  Lot’s wife is a prototype for the would-be Philadelphians, (and all Christians, in one sense).  She represents the foolish virgins of Matthew 25:2.

Matthew 25:2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

“Foolish” is Strong’s #3474, the Greek word moros: “dull or stupid (as if shut up), i.e. heedless, (mor.) blockhead, (appar.) absurd…” Zodhiates’ Complete Word Study New Testament adds of moros: “silly, stupid, foolish, from which the English word ‘moron’ is derived…”

The first lesson for us is to forget the idea of some man leading us into the place of safety or telling us when to go.  Did God send a man or did He send angels to take Lot and his family to the place of safety?  Notice Genesis 19:1.

Genesis 19:1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

Does this verse mean what it says?  God’s house, or family, in the end time is just like Lot’s house then.  It will be totally surrounded with wickedness—demons and humans alike.

Genesis 19:10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.

This word “house” is used in many, many prophecies for the end time.  “House” is Strongs #1004: “a house (in the greatest variety of applications, especially family)…”   Read the examples below.

Zechariah 4:9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.

Zechariah 3:7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.

Haggai 1:2 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’S house should be built.

Haggai 1:4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?

Haggai 1:8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD. 9 Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.

Haggai 1:14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in thehouse of the LORD of hosts, their God.

Malachi 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

The people in the end time will be smitten by spiritual blindness, just as the men of Lot’s day were smitten with physical blindness.  Is this not true today, late summer 1999? If Matthew 25:5 is true, we can be no other way than blind:

Matthew 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

Genesis 19:11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

The prototype continues in verse 11.  The persecutors, the tormentors of God’s house (family) in the end time will not be able to find the door (to salvation), just as the men in verse 11 could not find Lot’s door.  The true Philadelphians will be going through the doors of Revelation 3:8, turning many to righteousness as it says in Daniel 12:3:

Revelation 3:8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

Daniel 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

Notice Christ’s comparison in Romans 9:27-29.  Lot and his family were the seed in Sodom and Gomorrah.  The ten virgins of the end time are the seed.

The prototype continues in Genesis 19:14.  All of Lot’s family are offered a place of safety, as well as all of God’s family in the end time, but only the Philadelphian Church will be worthy of the Place of Safety, Rev. 3:10.

Rev 3:10  Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

Genesis 19:14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

All the virgins are awakened by the cry at midnight:

Matthew 25:6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. 7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

Continuing with Genesis 19:14, half of the end-time virgins will reject the salvation (place of safety) offered to them just as many of Lot’s family did.  Lot’s sons-in-law rejected the salvation offered (and maybe his sons—verse 12 seems to indicate that there were sons also).  So it is in the end time.  Fifty percent of the virgins are foolish (Matthew 25:2):

Matthew 25:2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

“Foolish” is Strong’s #3474, the Greek word moros: “dull or stupid (as if shut up), i.e. heedless, (mor.) blockhead, (appar.) absurd...” Zodhiates’ Complete Word Study New Testament adds of moros: “silly, stupid, foolish, from which the English word ‘moron’ is derived…”

Will the cry at midnight, delivered to the virgins by Elijah and his deputies, seem to the foolish virgins as the last sentence of Genesis 19:14?

Genesis 19:14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

I have covered this in other papers, but let us do it again:

Haggai 1:14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in thehouse of the LORD of hosts, their God,

“Stirred” is Strong’s #5782 meaning “[…through the idea of opening the eyes]; to wake (lit. or fig.)…”

“Remnant” is Strong’s #7611 meaning, “a remainder or residual (surviving, final) portion:—that had escaped…” Zodhiates’ Complete Word Study Old Testament adds, “It is a remainder, a remnant, a residue, survivors (especially after a slaughter)…”  I ask, has there been a slaughter in the Worldwide Church of God?

“Work” is Strong’s #4399 meaning, “deputyship…”  Zodhiates says, “The principle meaning is deputyship…”

“House” is Strong’s #1004 meaning, “a house (in the greatest variety of applications, especially family, etc.)…”

Notice that “house” means especially family.

Haggai 1:14 (above) ties in with Genesis 19:1.

Genesis 19:1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

“Angels” is Strong’s #4397: “to dispatch as a deputy, a messenger, specifically of God, i.e. an angel (also a prophet, priest, or teacher)…”  So here we have God and His deputies warning Lot’s family of what’s going to happen.  In the end time, we will have God, Elijah and his deputies warning the end-time virgins of what will soon be happening.  This is another instance that makes me believe only the Philadelphians will be delivering the warning as deputies and they will be the only ones taken to the place of safety.  Lot and part of his family were prototypes of the Philadelphians and they were taken to the place of safety by two angelic deputies.

God has an end-time family (Matthew 25:1-2) just as Lot had a family.  Part of God’s family is wise, and part is foolish.

Matthew 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

Notice that some of Lot’s family were wise, and some were foolish.  Lot, his wife and two daughters accepted the offer of a place of safety.  Neither of Lot’s sons-in-law or the daughters they had married would accept the offer of a place of safety.

Genesis 19:14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

Notice the last part of this verse.  Isn’t there a similar attitude among the foolish virgins?

Matthew 25:2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

“Foolish” is Strong’s #3474, the Greek word moros: “dull or stupid (as if shut up), i.e. heedless…”   Lot’s sons-in-law and their wives were totally surrounded by wickedness and chose to stay there.  The foolish virgins choose to stay with their foolish ways even after they are awakened by the cry at midnight.  Deuteronomy 30:19 applied to Lot’s family just as it applies to us today:  This choosing is a daily, ongoing thing.

Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

The Philadelphians will be the deputies offering the warning to the other six church attitudes.  Will the deputies be doing miracles as in Genesis 19:11?  You bet they will.  What about Christ’s original deputies (prototypes) of the New Testament Church?  Did they do miracles?  Yes, they healed the sick, cast out demons, etc.  The angelic deputies did miracles in Lot’s case.

Genesis 19:11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

Notice another prototype.  The messengers came to Lot at night, (Genesis 19:1 and 15).  Aren’t the end-time virgins awakened at midnight?  (Matthew 25:6)

Genesis 19:1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

Genesis 19:15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

Matthew 25:6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

On and on this prototype goes.  With morning (Genesis 19:15) came a sense of urgency.  In our case, when morning (Christ’s return) approaches the deputies of Elijah will see the gravity of the situation since the cry at midnight began.  Time has been marching towards morning.

Genesis 19:16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

Some of the Philadelphians will linger, drag their feet, etc.  Is this what Lot was doing?  Hoping maybe his daughters and sons-in-law (and maybe sons) would repent and go to the place of safety?  Will some of the Philadelphians want to linger when we are on the way to the place of safety, like Lot, maybe hoping for a loved one to repent?

Now notice something frightening here, especially if you are a man.  What are the numbers here?  Three women to one man.  Is this a prototype for the end-time Philadelphian church?  Will the ratio be three women to one man when they are awakened by the cry at midnight?  Remember who is offered a place of safety—of all the 7 churches, the promise of a place of safety is only offered to the Philadelphian church (Revelation 3:10).  Weren’t Lot and his family the only people offered a place of safety?

Revelation 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

The marriage banquet in Luke 14:16, is another prophecy in the New Testament that makes this even more frightening to me, being a man.  (I have also covered this in other papers.) God plans the marriage banquet and bids (calls) many at the end time.  Do not forget, the Bible is written for the end-time Christians, (1 Corinthians 10:11).

Luke 14:16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: 17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

He sends his servant at suppertime (notice “servant” is singular).  All the virgins are asleep at that time (Matthew 25:5), but they are alive at suppertime and had been called early. Notice in verse 14 that they “were bidden.”  Thisservant brings the cry at midnight in verse 6:

Matthew 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. 6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

Those bidden start making excuses:

Luke 14:18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.  19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.  20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

This servant (Elijah) is then sent on two more missions.  In Luke 14:24 comes the scary part of this parable.

Luke 14:24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

“None” is Strong’s #3762: “not even one (man, woman, or thing) i.e. none, nobody, nothing...”  “Men” is Strong’s #435, the Greek word aner: “a man (properly as an individual, male):—fellow, husband, man, sir.”  Zodhiates’ Complete Word Study New Testament adds: “man, male, as contrasted with the generic anthropos (444) which may refer to either sex.  A man as distinguished from a woman or child…a husband.”

This is truly frightening!  There is a group of men in the end time who will miss salvation.  Is this why Lot’s prototype family was 3-to-1 women-to-men on the way to the place of safety?

Now look at another prototype in Lot’s family—Lot’s wife.  She started on the way to the place of safety.  Will 25% of the people who actually start as zealous Philadelphians slowly drift off into one of the other church attitudes that God has a problem with?  Will they have to give their lives in martyrdom before they get into the permanent place of safety (eternal life)?

It is obvious that Lot’s wife missed the place of safety.  The other six churches do not miss the final place of safety (eternal life).  They only miss the physical one, as Lot’s wife did.  Revelation 7:14 tells us that the multitude no man can number comes out of great tribulation.  Since Lot’s wife was turned into a pillar of salt, and salt is a preservative, will they be preserved forever in eternal life in the kingdom of God after qualifying in the tribulation?

Revelation 7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

This is our ultimate goal any way—the safety of eternal life where none of the following exist.

Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Will our place of safety be in the mountains?

Genesis 19:17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

I doubt we will have the luxury of arguing with our angels as Lot did.  In his case, the destruction was local.  In our case, destruction will cover a large part of the world and grow to envelop the whole earth, as Christ’s return gets closer.
