OUT OF CONTEXT

Why is there ever a question about taking something out of what we call context? Where is the rule, the command, in God’s written word that says we can’t take any given verse and set it beside another verse in another part of the Bible to help get the full meaning?

If anything, God’s written rules make statements to the contrary of that point, for example, the following verses.

Isaiah 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

I will cover this thoroughly in this paper. We can be sure that Satan will keep the waters muddy. This is a given when you understand what’s going on in the end time. If Satan wasn’t involved in our lives as the great deceiver, we would simply read God’s word and believe it.

We could read the above verses and realize, “hey, God’s truth is a little bit here, a little bit there.” We would know that we have to rightly divide the word of truth, to separate the word of truth.

The purpose of this paper is to open our eyes to the folly of not studying God’s word properly, and thereby missing the full impact of what God is saying.

For instance, I personally do not believe the truth discussed in this paper can be gleaned without taking things out of what we call context. Again, I would ask, where is the statement in God’s word that says we can’t do that? The truth is, that “this out of context” idea is a concept from Satan that he has injected into the church to try to make more of us fail in our conquest for eternal life.

Regardless of what we learned in the Worldwide Church of God, or other groups, let’s approach God’s word with an open mind, without preconceived ideas that Satan is the father or originator of.

With that approach, we can start to comprehend the true meaning of the Bible for the end time church. Notice I Corinthians 10:11.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

“Examples” is Strong’s #5179: “a die (as struck), i.e. (by impl.) a stamp or scar; by anal. a shape, i.e. statue, (fig.) style or resemblance; spec. a sampler (“type“), i.e. a model (for imitation) or instance (for warning).”

Zodhiates’ Complete Word Study New Testament says: “type, as a constituent element of a parable or model of some reality which was yet to appear, a prototype of that which was yet to be developed and evolved.”

“Admonition” is Strong’s #3559: “calling attention to, i.e. (by impl.) mild rebuke or warning.”

“World” is Strong’s #165: “prop. an age; by extens. perpetuity (also past); by impl. the world; spec. (Jewish) a Messianic period (present or future):—age, course, eternal, (for) ever (-more), [n-]ever, (beginning of the , while the) world (began, without end).”

It is written for us, with many prototypes to be copied or imitated.

It could be argued that using 1 Corinthians 11:23-30 in the Passover service is taking things out of context. Passover certainly isn’t the theme of 1 Corinthians 11.

1 Corinthians 11:23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

The fact is, that set of scriptures is a little bit of the “here and there” that we take out of context when convenient. It is a whole new ball game when we want to argue about some Bible principle that we are unwilling to accept for whatever reason.

Today is May 31st, 2001 as I start to write this paper What is the truth about taking a verse out of context? I’ve heard countless comments about that, mostly negative. What is the truth about it? What is the mind of Christ?

Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

This is certainly not a suggestion in this verse. We would do well to consider it a command. It is part of working out your own salvation, Philippians 2:12.

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Let us take a look at 2 Timothy 2:15. This phrase “rightly dividing” is Strong’s #3718 meaning “to make a straight cut, i.e. to dissect (expound) correctly (the divine message): rightly-divide.”  Zodhiates’ Lexical Aids to the New Testament says of this same phrase, “to cut or divide…”

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

So, what is God’s written word saying “the mind of Christ?” It is saying that as we work out our own salvation with fear and trembling that we have to personally study God’s word and make straight (not ragged) cuts or dissections of his word.

So what do we do once we make this cut or dissection of God’s word, a verse or a series of verses? Do we just leave it there, or do we need to apply it every other place in the Bible that we can without twisting the scriptures?

Let’s look at a couple of examples. What do you people who are against taking a verse out of context do with Revelation 16:15?

Revelation 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

Read the surrounding verses. This verse certainly doesn’t fit where it’s at. It has to be taken out of Revelation 16 and applied where it has company, or like- mindedness.   2 Timothy 3:16 says all scripture is given by God.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Revelation 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

This word “watcheth” is Strong’s #1127 meaning “to keep awake. i.e. watch (lit or fig)…”  Who has trouble keeping awake? Is it the Sardis church, Revelation 3:2-3?

Revelation 3:2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

“Watchful” in verse 2 and “watch” in verse 3 are also Strong’s #1127, same as the above definition from Revelation 16:15.

So what about it? Doesn’t God expect us to rightly divide the word of truth and apply a verse where it fits? Don’t let Satan take you away with his idea of not taking things out of context. Sure, Satan doesn’t want us to rightly divide the word of truth. If we don’t, then we will stay in slavery to him through ignorance.

There is no understanding God’s word in the end time without understanding 1 Corinthians 10:11.

The Bible has all these physical examples that happen and are recorded for us upon whom the ends of the age are come. We act out the spiritual counterpart to these for instance. They drank water from the physical Rock. We drink from the spiritual Rock, Revelation 22:1.

Revelation 22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

Submitting to Satan’s line of thinking and not taking and applying a verse where it has meaning will certainly in the long run cost us our salvation. Go to Isaiah 28:9-13.

Here is the bottom line on how to study the Bible. This is personal instruction from God to you and me, along with a warning to those who will not rightly divide the word of truth. Notice in verse 10, “precept” is Strong’s #6673, meaning “an injunction, commandment, precept.”  “Line” is Strong’s #6957 meaning a “cord (as connecting) espec. for measuring…”  “Little” is Strong’s #2191 meaning “to dwindle, small, little.“

So what does God’s word say here? Does it forbid us to take a verse out of the context of where it is written, like Revelation 16:15 and apply it to other verses where it widens the meaning? If you are to believe God’s word, it instructs us to do exactly that, to place it where it makes sense. Here a little, there a little.

These precious gems of truth are scattered throughout God’s word. As we Christians rightly divide (make straight cuts) in God’s word, we see how these truths line up, (connected).

Who is this warning in verse 11-13 addressed to? Well, we have to go to other parts of the Bible and take verses out of context to make a straight cut and line them up to see.

In verse 12, the first word “rest” is Strong’s #4496 meaning “repose, peacefully…” The second word “rest” is Strong’s #5117 the primary meaning is “to rest, i.e. settle down, used in a great variety of applications…”  During the creation week, God ended his work and rested on the Sabbath or seventh day, Genesis 2:2-3. We continue to rest on the seventh day.

Genesis 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Our fore fathers, the original Israelites who came out of Egypt didn’t get to enter into the rest they were promised because of sin, Hebrews 3:10-11, 18. “Rest” in these two verses is Strong’s #2663 meaning “a reposing, down…” This same word rest is used in Hebrews 4:1, 3, 5, 10,11.

Hebrews 3:10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.

11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.

Hebrews 3:18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?

Hebrews 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

Hebrews 4:3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Hebrews 4:5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

Hebrews 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Now notice Hebrews 4:9.

Hebrews 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

The word “rest” here is Strong’s #4520 meaning a “sabbatism, i.e. (fig) the repose of Christianity (as a type of heaven)- rest.”  When does this rest start? At the first resurrection for the ones who obtain it and for the physical humans Revelation 20:1-3 happens. Oops, I took that out of context didn’t I?

Revelation 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Can you start to see how ludicrous it is to refuse to take something out of context and apply it where it needs to go? Go back to Isaiah 28:12, the first four words and the last five words.

Isaiah 28:12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

Who did Christ offer salvation and they wouldn’t listen to his words and refused eternal life? Looks like we may need to take some more of God’s word out of context to get the answer, Matthew 25:1, 2, 10.

Matthew 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

Matthew 25:10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

Notice here all these people were Christians, virgins, but 50% were foolish and lost their salvation. “Foolish” is Strong’s #3474 meaning “dull or stupid (as if shut up) i.e. heedless…”  The bottom line is that 50% of us end time virgins are more or less spiritual morons and will insist on doing things their way or the way of their favorite teacher.

Zodhiates’ Lexical Aids to the New Testament says of this word, Strong’s #3474 “moros, silly, stupid, foolish, from which the English word moron is derived…”

Isaiah 28:13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

The warning is clear in Isaiah 28:13. If you won’t rightly divide the word of truth, and get the whole picture of what God is trying to teach us then you won’t be in his kingdom.  “Fall” is Strong’s #3782 meaning “(to totter or weave through weakness of the legs, espec. the ankle), by impl. to falter, stumble…” Remember the end time virgins do the spiritual application of God’s word generally speaking. “Broken” is Strong’s #7665 meaning “to burst, (lit or fig) break (down, off, in pieces, up)…”  Again we do the spirit application. “Snared” is Strong’s #3369 meaning “to ensnare.”  “Taken” is Strong’s #3920 meaning “to catch (in a net, trap, or pit) generally to capture (lit or fig), occupy…”

The burden of proof is on each of us individually. Will we be wise virgins and study God’s word according to his instructions? Or will we do it our way and be a foolish virgin?

Just one more example you can test yourself on. Let’s look at the “temple” in the Bible. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, 1 Corinthians 6:19, and 2 Corinthians 6:16.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

2 Corinthians 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Remember what 1 Corinthians 10:11 says. These things are written for us upon whom the ends of the age are come. These four verses above state in no uncertain terms that we are the temple of God, the end time Christians in whom dwells the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

What can the Old Testament tell us about the temple? Let’s take a hard look at God’s temple today, June 2, 2001.

Is the church (temple) of God smashed to pieces just like God claimed he would do in Daniel 12:7? The word “scatter” is Strong’s #5310 meaning “to dash to pieces or scatter-be beaten in sunder, break (in pieces) broken…”  Wasn’t the temple in Jerusalem in the same condition? It had been razed. When the rebuilding started they had to rebuild the foundations.

Daniel 12:7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

Dare we pull these verses out of context and lay them out on the table along with the facts of what we have lived thorough and know to be true about God’s temple today? Let’s yank some more verses out of context and put it on the table with the above, Acts 1:15 and Acts 2:1-4.

Acts 1:15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty)

Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Can’t we honestly gather from God’s word that this about 120 was the foundation of the New Testament spiritual church? Is God’s word true or not? Review 1 Corinthians 10:11.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Review the definitions on page two.

Was the physical rebuilding of the temple and the New Testament foundation and start of the New Testament Church something, a prototype, to be imitated by the end time church? The book of Haggai has an end time spirit application. Dare we take more verse out of context to rightly divide the word of truth to learn more about our end time destiny? Go to Haggai 2:9.

Haggai 2:9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

The word “house” in the phrase latter house is Strong’s #1004 meaning “a house in the greatest variation of applications, espec. family…” This is clearly speaking of the end time temple (the church). Now, continuing in Haggai 2:15 the word “stone” is Strong’s #68 meaning “through the means to build, a stone…”

Haggai 2:15 And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:

In the time frame of this verse it seems the foundation was laid and there was a period of time before more building continued. Now, in verse 18 here again it seems to say the foundation was laid first and a lag time followed. There was a point when the work ceased in rebuilding the physical temple, Ezra 4:24.

Ezra 4:24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Let’s yank one more verse out of context, Zechariah 4:9.

Zechariah 4:9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.

The end time Zerubbabel lays the foundation of God’s temple here again “house” is Strong’s #1004 meaning “a house in the greatest variation of applications, espec. family…”

In Haggai 1:1 Zerubbabel is the governor of the Jews. In Revelation 2:9 and 3:9, Philadelphian Christians are compared to Jews. So, the end time leader of the Christians lays the foundation of the church.

Haggai 1:1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,

Revelation 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

Revelation 3:9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

A Jew in these verses is referring to those who are Jews inwardly, Romans 2:28-29.

Romans 2:28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:

29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, let’s be honest before God and with a clear conscience deal truthfully with God’s word. Rightly divide it, get a little here and a little there. Take the verses and apply them where they fit. If we don’t, Satan will certainly snare and trip us up and we will burn with him. As God sends us the spirit of truth in the end time, we will break the bonds of slavery to Satan, John 16:13, John 8:32, and 2 Timothy 2:26.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

2 Timothy 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

As I have said countless times before, there is no understanding God’s word without understanding 1 Corinthians 10:11.

The information that follows is typical of how God teaches us from the Bible. It forces us to rightly divide the word of truth, and gather a little here and a little there. Let’s start to look at this intriguing story God has spread throughout the Bible. This thing is unfolding right before our eyes today. We are mostly blinded to it and will see clearly as we receive more of the Spirit of Truth.

Signs follow, Mark 16:20.

Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

Let’s start in Malachi 4:5-6.

Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: 6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

So here is a promise God makes to send the end time Christians Elijah the prophet before Christ returns. This promise continues in Malachi 3:1.

Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

“Messenger” is Strong’s #4397 meaning “to dispatch as a deputy, a messenger, spec. of God, i.e. an angel (also a prophet)…”  This messenger or prophet prepares the way before Christ returns to his temple. We are the temple.

Now go to Matthew 17:10-13.

Matthew 17:10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. 12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

Notice these verses closely Christ is talking of two Elijah’s. In verse 11, restore is Strong’s #600 meaning to reconstitute (in health, home, or organization), restore. The word restore is a key we will dwell on a little more later. Verse 11 is speaking of a future Elijah, while verse 12 speaks of a past Elijah which is apparently already dead as Christ will be by the same people in the not too distant future. Verse 13 knew he was speaking of John the Baptist.

Look at John 1:23-34. It gives us some insight into what John the Baptist was doing to prepare the way before Christ as mentioned in Malachi 3:1 above.

John 1:23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. 25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; 27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. 31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. 33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

This future Elijah will be preparing the way and restoring all things before Christ’s second return. I’ll get into what needs to be restored and who does it later. This end time Elijah wears quite a number of different hats.

Luke 1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Don’t forget 1 Corinthians 10:11. Review the definitions on page one. All these things happened and are prototypes to be imitated in the end time. Luke 1:17 is speaking of the original John the Baptist/Elijah and the future Elijah referred to in Matthew 17, we just covered. What John the Baptist/Elijah did was only a token of this. The end time application is what’s major.

We have to pull this verse out of context and lay it beside the other one’s already covered to see the whole story. Notice the wording compared to Malachi 4:4-5, on page two, “hearts of fathers and children.”

Notice Luke 1:17 closely, “The disobedient to the wisdom of the just. To make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”  Who is this disobedient element here? It is the one half of the end time virgins who slumbered and slept, the foolish ones, plus a disobedient element among the wise, Matthew 25:1, 2, 5-12.

Matthew 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish…

5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. 7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. 9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. 11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

The foolish ones lost their salvation. The only answer is there is a disobedient element among the wise virgins, because they eventually repent and are made ready for Christ.

As we continue this intriguing story, in which I am trying to show you the folly of not taking things out of context and placing them with the rest of the story. We will see that there is not only a disobedient element among the ones who make it, there are spiritual carcasses, and spiritually paralyzed, lame or crippled in some way spiritually. Let’s go to Acts 2:21-23.

Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. 22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

We not only have to take individual verses out of context, we also have to take the context out of context in many cases and put it on the table with the other segments of the Bible which we have treated the same way.

Remember what it said back in Matthew 17:11? It said that Elijah would come and restore all things. Notice here in Acts 3:21, Christ remains in heaven until the restitution of all things.

Acts 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. 22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.

Verse 22 shows us clearly one of the hats that this end time Elijah wears. It is the Moses hat. Some translations use a capital “P” in the word prophet, no doubt implying that this prophet is Christ.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Notice this prophet is to be like Moses. Moses was a sinner like all humans. Christ was not a sinner or we have no salvation. What has this prophet, the end time Elijah, being like Moses, have to do with the restitution of all things? In a nutshell, he restores the knowledge of God to the end time church, just like the original Moses restored the knowledge of God to the ancient Israelites, who were in slavery to Pharaoh. The end time church is in slavery to Pharaoh, Satan, too, Ezekiel 29:3.

Ezekiel 29:3 Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.

He has put us all to sleep, Matthew 25:5. Notice it says all, there are no exceptions.

Matthew 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

We have been sleepwalking with Christ. The true way to salvation has to be brought or restored to us by this end time Elijah/Moses. Can’t we start to see how 1 Corinthians 10:11 is true? Those things happened and were written down to be imitated in the end time. I don’t see how this can be understood from God’s word without taking things out of context.

Notice that the instructions are to hear this man in Acts 3:23.

Acts 3:23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

Why? God chooses this man to restore all things. He will restore the true knowledge of God to this sick and dying church of God. Who among us would argue that the church of God is not sick and dying? We have no choice in choosing this person. It is Christ and the Father’s job and they certainly are capable of showing us who this man is.

Continuing, the warning is clear here. The foolish virgins who will not hear will be destroyed. “Destroyed” is Strong’s #1842 meaning “to extirpate…” According to Webster’s Dictionary, extirpate means “to pull up by the roots.”

There is more on this prophet in Deuteronomy, the place Peter was quoting from in Acts 3:23.

Let’s go over to Deuteronomy 18:15-19.

Deuteronomy 18:15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

16 According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.

17 And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken. 18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. 19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

This is another series of verses that have to be lifted out of context and laid right beside the others we’ve already covered to get a clear picture of what’s going on with the end time Elijah and the many hats that he wears.

Deuteronomy 18:15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

In verse 15, we are told that he will come from among the brethren. Remember that we do a spirit application, so he will be a church member, whom some of us will have known for a long time. In my King James Version, the word “prophet” has a capital “P,” which implies that they think the prophet is Christ. In the same sentence, though, it says that this prophet is like unto him. Moses was a sinner and some of them are written down for us. So, the word prophet doesn’t refer to Christ if he was like unto Moses. Also in this verse we are exhorted to listen to this man. We’ve already covered back in Acts the penalty for not hearing this man. Continuing in verse 17, notice that God starts to do the talking here.

Deuteronomy 18:17 And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.

Deuteronomy 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

Continuing in verse 18, God says “I will raise them up a prophet from among the brethren, like you Moses.” So God says he will choose from among the church of God a man who will be like Moses who restores all things.

Acts 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

Matthew 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

In verse 18, this mighty God who inhabits eternity says he will put his words in this man’s mouth and he will say what God wants him to say. So here again us, the average church members have no choice in this matter. Our only choice is to choose to believe and obey what this man says or not to believe, which will lead to our destruction in the Lake of Fire. This is made clear in verse 19 and back in Acts where we were just at.

Every verse or series of verses we have covered in this paper is a missing link in the chain of events in this end time scenario. I say again that this aspect of the end time events can’t be understood unless we just lift the verses out of context and lay them end to end like a chain.

I want to ask some questions:

  1. Why does God have to send an end time Elijah/Moses to restore all things?
  2. What are these things?
  3. What led to the development of the circumstances that the end time Elijah/Moses has to deal with? God allowed and probably designed this end time course of events that we, the end time church, find ourselves in.

1 Corinthians 10:11 is true. Let’s review the definitions again.

These things are written and have to be acted out as instructed in the end time.

Matthew 25:1-7 is true.

Matthew 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. 6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. 7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

I repeat again, there are no exceptions. If we are a virgin and have the Holy Spirit, then we are all asleep until we hear the cry at midnight. That is the beginning of the restoration of all things.

To answer question #2, it is the true way to salvation. We have been sleep walking with Christ and we just know part of the way to eternity. As Paul said, we see though a glass darkly, 1 Corinthians 13:12.

1 Corinthians 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

So, we have a lot of the true knowledge of God missing. There are many missing links in our chain to eternity.

The answer to question #1, if we have been spiritually sleepwalking with Christ, it is pretty obvious that we need spiritual knowledge to wake us up.

Now on to question #3. Amos 8:11-12 tells us what led to the development of this sleeping condition.

Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

This is all totally and completely God’s will. Satan hasn’t done anything of significance apart from it. We have to come out of Egypt and our slavery to Pharaoh, King of Egypt, The Great Dragon, just like our forefathers did. This is one of the prototypes we act out spiritually.

Ezekiel 29:3 Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.

Does Amos 8:11-12 not describe the church today, especially the descendents of the Worldwide Church of God? We run to and from splinter group to splinter group looking for spiritual food and we don’t find any. There is lots of information on this spiritual famine in the end time. Haggai mentions it.

The story of the original Elijah and the famine of his day is what I want to dwell on. 1 Corinthians 10:11 is true and this famine has to be acted out or imitated in the end time. We do it in a spiritual sense.

Go to 1 Kings 17:1.

1 Kings 17:1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

Elijah makes the statement by God’s inspiration that there would be no rain or dew, except at his word. We have to have the water of life (the Holy Spirit) to live spiritually.

Revelation 22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

In the physical realm, rain and dew are the water of life or living waters to the plants, animals, and humans. If the physical rain and snow is cut off long enough, every physical living thing dies, including humans.

So, what happens in a spiritual famine as God claimed he would send in the end time, Amos 8:11? As this spiritual famine wears on and on, the Christians, starving for the true word of God, become weaker and weaker spiritually to the point of spiritual death and paralyzation, lameness, crippled, etc.

We will see in hindsight that the only true word of God at this time was the end time Elijah’s word, whether it’s written in papers and articles or orally on tapes and Bible studies.

So, Satan, Pharaoh, King of Egypt, the Great Dragon slowly starves the end time Christians to death spiritually as we are slaves to his false system. The spirit of truth is our ticket to salvation.

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

God allows this so that 1 Corinthians 10:11 is true.

So this mighty God the Father and Jesus Christ cut off the living waters that come down from above as this famine begins to take hold.

Joshua 3:16 That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

Read my paper on “Crossing Jordan” for more information on this famine of the word, Amos 8:11-12.

Continue in 1 Kings 17:9.

1 Kings 17:9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

Elijah is following God’s orders and moves on. Notice this about this verse, Elijah is sent to this widow. A widow is a woman. A woman represents the church. Christ’s bride is the church. To me, Ephesians 5:22-33 seems to indicate this, especially verses 27, 31-32. Galatians 4:26 and Revelation 21:2 seem to indicate this as well.

Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Galatians 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

Revelation 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Continue in 1 Kings 17:9.

1 Kings 17:9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

Elijah is sent to this widow. What the application in the end time means is that the church here, in 2001, sits as a widow, cut off from the waters that come down from above as this famine of the word wears on and on.

The Feast of Tabernacles is just a vacation. The Holy Days are empty hollow rituals we go though as Satan slowly starves us to death spiritually with God’s permission.

God has a goal He is accomplishing in this destruction of the church. Over the years, Satan has carried the church into a major form of idolatry, known as the hierarchy system, of which the late Worldwide Church of God was a prime example. So God is destroying it, Daniel 12:7.

“Scatter” is Strong’s #5310 meaning “to dash to pieces, or scatter, to be beaten in sunder, break into pieces…”

If you have eyes to see, this has certainly happened to the Worldwide Church of God as the splinter groups continue to splinter. See, a hierarchy system doesn’t allow you or me to practice Philippians 2:12.

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

God won’t have a man between you and Himself.

Continue in 1 Kings 17:10-12.

1 Kings 17:10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

12 And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

Here is a perfect example of the true church of God today, the ones with the Holy Spirit. The woman/the church is destitute, forlorn, forsaken, and stares death right in the face as the famine of the word takes its toll. The church depicted by this widow, the bread of life and the Holy Spirit depicted by the meal in the barrel and the oil in the cruse are all but gone. Certain death is forced upon this widow/the church and her son/Christians, if God doesn’t send physical rain to them and living waters, the Holy Spirit, to us.

These mighty Gods as they work out their purpose let the widow and her son representing the church go right down to death’s door and then sustaining them, verse 14-16.

1 Kings 17:14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. 16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

What happens in any famine of any duration? Disease and death always follow.

1 Kings 17:17 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

What happened to the woman, the end time church? Her son died! The church’s children start dying spiritually. Her son’s breath left him. He was just a carcass lying there. The same things happen in the end time church, before we are revived by the end time Elijah. Remember he restores all things, Acts 3:21 and Matthew 17:11.

Acts 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

Matthew 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

Notice in John 20:22, breath is equated with the Holy Spirit.

John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

As the end time famine of the word waxes worse and worse, the Holy Spirit ceases to function in certain Christians just as the breath ceased to exist in the widow’s son. So, the church has a lot of spiritual carcasses lying around with no Holy Spirit breath in them. Just as surely as the original Elijah resurrected the woman’s son, the end time woman/church will have her spiritually dead children resurrected by the end time Elijah. The sleeping virgins are as good as dead as far as Holy Spirit works are concerned, Matthew 25:5.

Matthew 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

The sleeping virgins need resurrecting just as the widow’s son died and was resurrected. Death is called “sleep” in the Bible.

1 Kings 2:10 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.

1 Kings 11:43 And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.

Matthew 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

1 Corinthians 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

So how did Elijah resurrect this dead carcass, 1 Kings 17:21?

1 Kings 17:21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.

“Stretch himself” is Strong’s #4058 meaning “to stretch…”  So Elijah being the chosen man of God, the prophet at that time, stretched or covered the child three times and his soul, breath, life came again unto him.  It’s the same with these dead spirit carcasses in the church at the end time. This end time Elijah/Moses restores all things to the end time church, the knowledge of God, just as the original Moses restored the knowledge of God to the ancient Israelites. This end time Elijah/Moses will no doubt have to cover these spirit carcasses at least three times with pure Holy Spirit truth to revive them.

I just want to touch one more thing and take it out of context in this story.

Let’s not forget 1 Corinthians 10:11. All these things are to be imitated in the end time. The prototypes that were examples and written for us upon whom the ends of the age have come.

So the end time Peter and John will go up to the temple, which is us (we covered this at the beginning of the paper). This Christian in Acts 3, is lame, crippled, or maybe partially paralyzed spiritually even from the day of his baptism or begettal.

Acts 3:2 And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple;

Peter and John healed this physical person through Christ’s power.

The Peters, Johns, and many others in the end time, especially the early stages, will be passing out spiritual healing by the things which they have learned from this end time Elijah which God uses to restore all things and they in turn teach and spiritually heal through Christ’s power.

How on earth could we ever think we could wake up to God’s truth to see and take hold of the chain of events that will lead us into the kingdom? We can never obtain the crucial truth without lifting these links of the chain out of context and placing them next to the ones where they fit.
