PRISONER OF WAR: HAVE YOU BEEN ONE?

Can you be one?  Could you be a prisoner of war and not know it spiritually?  You would certainly know something was wrong in your spiritual life.

Is there a member of the Church of God who does not know there is something wrong in the church today, May 29th, 2002?  The church is in shambles like the two world trade towers.  When I say that, I am speaking of the “late” Worldwide Church of God.  God has other folds where he has sheep also.

John 10:16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

John 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

By no stretch of the imagination could anyone say that the church is united as ONE today.  This is where we are in prophecy.  God is starting to gather his sheep and herd them towards the ultimate goal of oneness, just as the Father and Christ are.

The condition of God’s people worldwide today is that of spiritual starvation, Amos 8:11-12.

Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

What happens in a spiritual famine?  Lack of food causes a change in the body. As the hunger gets worse, the human starts to sleep more.  I suppose this is a survival reaction for the body to conserve energy.  Have you ever noticed how sleepy you get when you are fasting?  So what happens when we are spiritually in a famine?  Doesn’t the same thing happen?  You bet, and that explains Matthew 25:5.

Matthew 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

Notice it says all.  There are no exceptions to this.  If you have the Holy Spirit in the end time, you have been spiritually asleep.  I will discuss the effects of a spiritual famine later in this paper.

What about the title of this paper?  Can you be a prisoner of spiritual war?  As I have said in numerous papers to understand the Bible in the end time, you have to understand I Corinthians 10:11.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

“Examples” is Strong’s #5179: “a die (as struck), i.e. (by impl.) a stamp or scar; by anal. a shape, i.e. statue, (fig.) style or resemblance; spec. a sampler (“type“), i.e. a model (for imitation) or instance (for warning).”

Zodhiates’ Complete Word Study New Testament says: “type, as a constituent element of a parable or model of some reality which was yet to appear, a prototype of that which was yet to be developed and evolved.”

“Admonition” is Strong’s #3559: “calling attention to, i.e. (by impl.) mild rebuke or warning.”

“World” is Strong’s #165: “prop. an age; by extens. perpetuity (also past); by impl. the world; spec. (Jewish) a Messianic period (present or future):—age, course, eternal, (for) ever (-more), [n-]ever, (beginning of the , while the) world (began, without end).”

We do the spiritual application of these things that were acted out physically and written down for us.

Eph 6:12 gives us a little insight into our warfare and our battles.  Other translators translate the word “wrestle” in different ways.  “Fighting” and “struggle” are a couple of examples.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

I do not think any of us would argue the point that the early church was locked in mortal combat with the forces of evil.  So will the end time church be in a life or death spiritual struggle with an unseen powerful enemy?  Are 2 Timothy 2:25-26 and 2 Timothy 3:1 true or not?  You bet they are.  If they’re not, then the rest of the Bible isn’t true.

2 Timothy 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

Notice how this is dated, “the last days.”

The word “captive” in verse 26 is Strong’s #2221 meaning “to take alive (make a prisoner of war) i.e. fig., to capture or ensnare…”  God has allowed Satan to take us spiritual prisoners at his determination, his whim.  We as Christians have a part to play in our release from this captivity, this spiritual prisoner of war status.  In verse 26, the phrase “recover themselves” is Strong’s #366 meaning “to become sober again, i.e. (fig) regain one’s senses…”  We have to acknowledge the truth and repent.  This wakes us up from that spiritual sleep Matthew 25:5.

Matthew 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

This truth will no doubt be brought to us by the end time Elijah as he restores all things, Matthew 17:10-13.

Matthew 17:10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

Matthew 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

Matthew 17:12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

Matthew 17:13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

Luke 1:17 gives us some more insight into the waking up process and who does it.  Elijah makes ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Luke 1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

God certainly puts a lot of the responsibility for escaping Satan’s death grip on us.  I do not know how long it will be until you read this paper, but regardless of what fold of God’s church you are in, compare what I am saying in this paper to what you have experienced in your personal life as well as spiritual life for the last 20 years.  The concepts we are discussing explains the total condition of the end time church, endless disputes over doctrines, calendars, finances, etc.

Let’s go behind the scenes and look at some truth that I have never heard taught and just became aware of in the last three or four years.  Ezekiel 29:3 is the place to start.  This is another key verse to understanding God’s word.  It unlocks access to the big picture.  Notice the great dragon, Satan, is king of Egypt.

Ezekiel 29:3 Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.

Revelation 20:2 identifies the great dragon.  Did Pharaoh king of Egypt, the physical king have prisoners?  You bet.  The whole nation of Israel was held prisoner.  Is the Bible true or not?  I Cor 10:11 that you just read a few pages back makes it very plain the physical acts of Pharaoh are prototypes to be repeated spiritually in the end time.

Revelation 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

The fact is the whole church are prisoners of Satan.  If we are spiritually asleep, we are in a spiritual slavery.  Satan is the one who took us captive and God allowed it for his own reasons.  There are a number of verses in Exodus that have to be speaking on a spiritual level.  I will just mention a couple.  Exodus 7:4 is one of them.

Exodus 7:4 But Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you, that I may lay my hand upon Egypt, and bring forth mine armies, and my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments.

Notice Christ is bringing forth armies as well as people.  It certainly isn’t armies of frogs he is speaking of.  These are armies of angelic beings taken prisoners by Satan.  I will deal with this subject in the future and have dealt with that in other papers.

Ex 12:12 is another example.  Who are these little “g” gods?  “Gods” is Strong’s #430, meaning “gods in the ordinary sense…”

Exodus 12:12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.

Psalms 97:7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.

Psalms 86:8 Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.

These two verses in Psalms use the same Strong’s #430.  See these ordinary gods are capable of worshipping the real God. This certainly is not speaking of idols of gold and silver.

You know what 2 Corinthians 4:4 says.  When we are spiritually asleep we are blinded to spiritual truth, just like when we are physically asleep we are oblivious to any of our surroundings.

2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Read what God says in Ezekiel 28:12-13.  This is clearly speaking of a spirit being, Satan, when we put it all together.

Ezekiel 28:12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

Now read Ezekiel 28:2.  A prince is lesser or more ordinary than a king.  Satan is the god of this world.  He has lesser gods under him.

Ezekiel 28:2 Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:

All these lesser or ordinary gods were told to repent in Psalms 97:7.

Psalms 97:7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.

What does that have to do with us being prisoners?  Plenty, isn’t it implied that the physical pharaoh had lieutenants under him who carried out his will?  Do you remember the taskmasters over the Israelite slaves?  If we are to believe God’s word, 1 Corinthians 10:11 shows us there will be Satan’s lieutenants enforcing Satan’s will on the captive church.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Did you know that Satan has spirit slaves, “angels” as well as the physical people in the church?  Go to Isaiah 14:12-20.  Verses 12-14 are clearly speaking of Satan.  No physical being could ever remotely think in these terms.  I have covered these verses more thoroughly in other papers, so I will just hit the points that have to do with being a prisoner of war.

Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. 16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; 17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?

18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.  19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.  :20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.

At this point I have to digress somewhat.  When you study the above verses you start dealing with angelic prisoners.  Why is I Peter 3:19-20 in the Bible?  The word “spirits” means “spirits” and “prison” means “a guarding or a prison.”  I have a long paper on this subject titled “He Went and Preached to the Spirits in Prison.”  I suggest you read it.  Christ did this preaching after he was resurrected.

1 Peter 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

1 Peter 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

Let me get right to the bottom line on this and you can get substantiating details from the papers mentioned above.  Satan created sin.  Angels that sinned needed forgiveness before humans did.  In I Peter 3:20, it says there was disobedience; there was murdering and lying going on in the angelic world just like in our world today.

Satan has spirit prisoners.  Apparently he has righteous angels in jail.  Review Isaiah 14:17 above.  Christ and the father have demons in jail as well.  Study Revelation 9:1-11.

Revelation 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. 2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.

6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.

8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.

9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. 10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.

11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

What crime have these fallen angels committed to be put in this jail?  Now read Revelation 9:14.  This is a different prison.

Revelation 9:14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.

It seems apparent to me that God and Christ have jailed these criminal demons, but what about the statement I made concerning Satan having prisoners of war that are spirit beings.  Look again at Isaiah 14:16-19.

Isaiah 14:16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?

18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.

19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.

In verse 16, don’t let the word “man” mislead you.  It is Strong’s #376 and it is the same word used in Daniel 9:21 to describe Gabriel.  It is just the way God has written it.

Daniel 9:21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.

This whole set of verses in Isaiah 14:12-20 is speaking of spirit beings. That Earth mentioned in verse 16 is also spirit.  I also have a paper on this subject.  To keep from repeating things word for word I’ll just touch on some of this.

Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.

The word kingdom in verse 16 implies there are spirit kings.  What does it say in Ezekiel 29:3? Pharaoh the great dragon is king of Egypt.  Here in verse 16 of Isaiah 14, “kingdoms” is plural.  So, on this spirit Earth there are kingdoms.  Verse 18 makes it clear that if you have kingdoms, you also have kings.

Ezekiel 29:3 Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.

Isaiah 14:16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

Isaiah 14:17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?

Isaiah 14:18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.

Isaiah 14:19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.

To make the story shorter, you have the description of an angelic battle of war here in these verses.  You have dead spirit kings in their graves.  You have an earth described as a wilderness because it is so wrecked by warfare. Apparently, this warfare has a lot of hand-to-hand combat since they were thrust through with the sword and you have prisoners of war.  According to the wording in verse 17, the prisoners may very well be enslaved to this very day. The word “prisoners” is Strong’s #615 meaning “bound, i.e. a captive- (those which are) bound prisoner.”

Isaiah 14:17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?

So what have we learned so far?  One, we humans are prisoners of Satan, as well as many righteous angels.  In addition, God has prisoners in the bottomless pit as well as in the river Euphrates.

Let us look at the effects of being a prisoner of war and being enslaved to Satan.

Remarkably, you can see it on TV.  If the Bible is to be our guide and 1 Corinthians 10:11 is true, the physical prototype has been acted out before us.  We do the spiritual counterpart.  The treatment of the Jews and some other minorities as well as captured allied soldiers in World War II in the concentration camps was about as inhumane as it gets.  Even as bad as those were, there was one prison camp in Korea that was rated even worse.  On TV documentaries covering German prison camps, you see the starved, emaciated, and gaunt hollow eyed bodies that look like living skeletons.  Their looks scream loudly for food, some kind of physical nourishment and help.  Other pictures show heaps of carcasses, dead humans that have starved to death or, in many cases, killed by disease brought on by lack of nourishment.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Incredibly, once you understand what is going on in the church of God today, June 2002, we have been acting out spiritually the physical prototype that went before us.  Let us not kid ourselves.  God communicates to us what we need to know if we are willing to listen.

Since the Bible is written for us upon whom the ends of the world (age) has come, I Cor 10:11 and its instruction to us are inseparable.  II Timothy 2:26 means exactly what it says.  I explained this verse earlier in this paper, as well as Amos 8:11-12 and Matthew 25:5.

2 Timothy 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:

Amos 8:12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

Matthew 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

The end time church right now is spiritually as gaunt, starved and emaciated as the Jews and others in the German concentration camps.  In the church of God today there are spiritual skeletons, still alive spiritually, but barely able to function.  There are also heaps of spiritual carcasses waiting to be resurrected back to spirit life.  The same thing happens spiritually when you are a spiritual prisoner as it does physically.

The above verses are true or there is no salvation.  A famine of the word, “God’s true word,” leads us to spiritual starvation and eventually spiritual death.  Satan has taken the church of God captive.  It is certainly obvious when you compare the church’s actual condition to what the Bible says the church’s condition ought to be.  Satan has made us prisoners to his thought process.  God has allowed this.  It was not done without his permission.  The sleeping state of the church allows no intake of spiritual food so the spiritual starvation continues as the living Christians become thinner and thinner spiritually.  The pile of spiritual carcasses gets larger and larger as more Christians succumb and die a spiritual death because of forces beyond their control.

Do not close your minds friends and acquaintances you might consider former Christians and write them off.  Remember there are no exceptions to the sleeping in Matthew 25:5.  It says ALL.

Matthew 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

II Timothy 2:26 doesn’t’ show me where there would be any exception to that verse either.  Satan can create any environment to put us to sleep spiritually and keep us imprisoned there.

2 Timothy 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

God shows us plainly in the Bible how He will deal with these spiritual carcasses, these end time Christians who have to some degree ceased to function as Christians.  There are some more and some less in that category.  Let us look at two physical prototypes that are written for us to imitate spiritually.

First, go to I Kings 17:17-22.  The woman’s son, her child, died.  If you are student of the Bible, you know that the church, Christ’s bride, is pictured as a woman.  In all probability, the physical famine of Elijah’s day played a part in this death.  In the famine of the word today, lack of spiritual food leads us to spiritual death.  Through God’s power, Elijah was able to revive this woman’s child.  So, will the end time Elijah, though God’s power, be able to revive many spiritual carcasses (humans)?

1 Kings 17:17 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?

19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

20 And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.

22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

The phrase in Matthew 17:10-13, “restore all things” has significant meaning.  Notice these verses carefully.  It is clearly speaking of two Elijahs.  John the Baptist and the end time Elijah.  As the end time Elijah starts the restoration of God’s truth, the spiritual famine ends and spirit life gradually comes back to those Christian carcasses.

Matthew 17:10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.  12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

The other physical prototype appears in Acts 20:7-12.  Notice here again that this was a young man, a child of the church if you will.  Very few of us adults alive now only made wise decisions when we were young.  When I think back, I am embarrassed at some of the ones that I made and things I did as a result.

Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

8 And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together.

9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.

10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.

11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.

12 And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted.

If the prototypes hold true, the end time leader whom God chooses will revive many of the end time Christians who have made spiritual death decisions.  So we need to be careful in how we judge those we consider our fallen brethren.

If we are to honestly assess the folds of God’s sheep today, and compare it to the one Christ prayed for in the final after Passover prayer, the lack of real truth being taught, the confusion on the calendar, the non-healing, the plain hostility of one group towards another, etc.  It is obvious that the church of God is in a crisis, totally imprisoned by Satan and perilously close to spiritual death.

Confronting an ex-member of the Worldwide Church of God with a point of truth is as productive as talking to a rock.  Today, June 4, 2002, there are some distinct signs that this is turning around.  God hasten the day lest we all become Christian carcasses.
